Cholesterol is a lipid (fat) that is produced by the liver.  The body requires some cholesterol to build the outer membranes of cells, insulate nerve fibers, produce sex hormones, produce hormones released by the adrenal glands, production of bile, to convert sunshine to vitamin D and metabolize fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

However, too much cholesterol may lead to fatty deposits in blood vessels that make it difficult for blood to reach its required destination.

High cholesterol (also called hypercholesterolemia) may be inherited, but more often is the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices.  When high cholesterol is the result of unhealthy lifestyle choices it is preventable and treatable.  Healthy diet, regular exercise and, if necessary, medication can help bring cholesterol back to acceptable levels.
